Teaching Reform of the International College: Make Language Blurt-out Art

On the afternoon of May 26, there were no empty seats in the international academic exchange hall in Jiaoqiaoyuan North Campus. The first “Blurt out” English reading contest was held here by the international college. Dean of the International College Yang Hui, Deputy Dean Chen Weidong and Deputy Secretary of Party Committee Xia Xianfeng attended the contest. Deputy Chief of Teaching Supervision Team of JUFE Chen Haihua, full-time teachers of School of Foreign Languages Du Jingping, Zhang Jianli, Lyu Shuming and Zhang Shengping acted as judges.
At the beginning of the contest, Dean of the International College Yang Hui made a speech, illustrating the importance and necessity for holding the contest from the perspective of the college target of cultivating international talents, pointing out the critical role of reading contest in the reform of English teaching and the integration of “the first classroom” and “the second classroom”. Dean Yang explained the original intention for “Blurt Out” reading contest with “Language is blurt-out art”, emphasized the importance of oral communication and expression, and put forward the anticipation on students becoming qualified international talents with excellent English speaking ability.
The contest was pushed to a new high in rounds of hurrah: “it is so excited! You have no idea who’s next!” As a major feature of the contest, all the competitors were randomly selected by PU, taking class as unit, divided into six rounds for PK, after the designated topic reading part and the hidden topic reading part ended, calculate the average score of each class, obtain the class result with score ranking, and finally record into the score for courses of English Intensive Reading and English Listening for class 172 semester.
“During the past few moths, all the students studied and made progress together, becoming a study community, learning with sharing, which is the first time in JUFE!” Deputy Chief of Teaching Supervision Team of JUFE Professor Chen Haihua made the comment on the contest, and she fully affirmed the pioneering significance of the contest on innovating English teaching pattern and improving students’ English proficiency, and encouraged students to pursue the persistent progress in English learning.
It is learned that the International College has been rooting in teaching reform for a long term, keeps propelling the reform and exploration for international-oriented school running in allusion to the demand of students and the society. It takes the lead in launching the transcript of “the second classroom”, accelerates the integrated innovation of “the first classroom” and “the second classroom”, vigorously boosts English teaching reform, carried out “English speaking test” since the students of grade 2014, cooperates with the third party assessment organization, invites former IELTS examiners to be the examiner for the test; launches series of contests, and keeps strengthening students’ verbal expression and communication level by means of “reading contest” for freshmen, “listening contest” for sophomores, “business promotion contest” for junior students, and cultivates international talents with the qualities of “integrity, sensitivity, honest and perseverance”.
